Lorraine Willis Assistant Principal - Students
On reflecting this week, there are words that have been present and that continue to echo in my thoughts, ”We are called...” It seems to be something that underlies not only what we do here at Xavier, but why we do what we do. Being ‘called’ is not always the ‘easy’ option. It can be a challenge - when we are called to stand up for what is right, when we are called to make a change to something or when we are called to be a voice for others. But that is what makes a calling so vital and that is why it is something that we need to be proud of in our Xavier community.
As members of our Xavier community, we are all called to the lives of one another, to make a positive impact on each other and on the environment we share. We are called to uphold the values that underpin our school and to treat one another with respect. There are days when it is harder to hear that call than others, but as a Xavier community, we need to be prepared to respond as we are required. We need to stand strong in the face of injustice, to be a voice for those who have been silenced and to be a friend in the face of the many forms of loneliness that exist in our world today. Our students have so many opportunities to answer that call to the greater good and we see examples of that each day in our classrooms and in our yard. We witness our students reach out the hand of inclusion, speak the words of support and embrace friendships. Yet we still sometimes see the call being ignored - individuals turning away from one another and being silent when it is the time to speak up. We look to the examples of those who are strong enough to be an example of the call to action that is reflected in our school interactions and in our faith for example and inspiration to all in our community.
As a school community, we continue to be very proud of the efforts we are witnessing from our senior students in the completion and showcase of their HSC major projects across a number of subject areas. We are grateful to the teachers who have worked long hours after school and at weekends to assist the students in reaching their goals. This week we celebrated the Personal Interest Projects completed by the Society and Culture students and, this coming week, we will celebrate the works of the drama, art, music and design & technology students at our showcase evening on Wednesday.
Students across the other year levels have continued their efforts in their classes and in the learning experiences that take them beyond the classroom. Our Year 9 students have had the opportunity to nominate to become Peer Support Leaders in 2020, when they will work with our new Year 7 students and our Year 11 students now have the opportunity to nominate for the role of School Captain. As they prepare for their Immersion and Community Service experiences, they are contemplating answering the call of leadership.
It would be remiss of me not to mention something of the student achievement at the end of last week as the Year 12s triumphed over the staff in the annual soccer match. The afternoon summed up the spirit of the students, the nature of connection that has and continues to be fundamental to that cohort and the genuine joy experienced at their success. It was a wonderful end to the week and a fitting result for the efforts of the students.
As Spring begins to creep in, the sun begins to shine and the evenings begin to lengthen, I encourage all those in our community to find an opportunity to listen for a call that needs to be answered.
