HSC Intensive Studio Practice Course- National Art School Sydney

18 November 2016

It is with great pride we acknowledge the achievements of Taylar Morgan and Brooke Cawthray, of Year 11 for their Band 6 results received through the HSC Intensive Studio Practice Course at the National Art School, Sydney. Both Brooke and Taylar were two of 173 students selected from 390 applicants from 105 schools around NSW. This course is a BOSTES endorsed university course and their fine results will appear on their HSC transcript.

From their account below it is clear that Taylar and Brooke enjoyed their taste of learning in a tertiary environment and within the studio based methodology which is seminal to the National Art School. No doubt it will inform their future artistic practice. We sincerely believe that it will help these young emerging artists to conquer the challenges that lay ahead of them in their studies of HSC Visual Arts.

Our Artistic Immersion…

During the months of July and September this year we were lucky enough to embark on a trip to Sydney where we were immersed in a world of art for a week, practising our preferred medium of ceramics through the HSC Intensive Studio Practice Course at the National Art School. After applying for the course late in April we had only pondered over the thought of being accepted into such a nationally renowned school where artists such as John Olsen, Ann Thomson and Margaret Olley attended. Our dream soon became a reality. We would be attending classes from 9-5pm, which for us was more around 11-5pm due to our 5am start and 2 hour train trip to Darlinghurst, not to mention our need for some avocado on toast and a flat white.

Every morning we were greeted by our teacher and mentor Linda, a quirky and eccentric artist from the Blue Mountains, she was more like Phoebe from ‘Friends’ than the stereotypical art teacher we had expected. Her bright personality and true passion made the class so memorable along with the friends we made from schools all across NSW.

The July holiday sessions consisted of learning various techniques and then utilizing them in the creation of our own pieces for exhibition in September. By this time most of us had finished our pieces ready for glazing. During the September module we also started to explore the art world of Darlinghurst, visiting various boutique galleries and making friends we will now have for life.

This trip didn’t just allow us to have a sense of independence, but reconfirmed our love and passion for art and artmaking. If ever given the opportunity we both highly recommend to grasp it with both hands in knowing that it will an experience of a lifetime.
