Jemma Power selected for ARTEXPRESS 2015

Jemma Power’s artwork ‘DE-CON-STRUCT-IVISM’ has been selected for ARTEXPRESS and will be exhibited at the McGlade Gallery Australian Catholic University in 2015.

Jemma’s work uses the manipulation of styrofoam cups to explore the tension between construction and destruction, the extraordinary and banal, beauty and ugliness and control and chaos.

Deconstructivism is a development of postmodern architecture. It is characterized by fragmentation, an interest in manipulating a structure’s surface and skin. It focusses on non-rectilinear shapes which appear to distort and dislocate elements.The finished visual appearance is characterised by unpredictability and controlled chaos. -adapted from www.merriam-webster.com

Within my work the manipulation of styrofoam cups create a fragmented, yet beautiful, surface that intrigues and compels the viewer into a journey across and around a once banal object. The structure of this object is both enhanced and destroyed through the embellishment of its skin. The object itself is throwaway and disposable; the potential that lies within mostly overlooked. Thus highlighting our human shortsightedness. Whilst a beautiful surface is created, it belies the environmental disaster that permeates through all aspects of the original object.

Overall, it is the tension between construction and destruction, the extraordinary and banal, beauty and ugliness and, control and chaos that my work endeavours to explore.
