Rural Australians for Refugees

27 Jun 2018

On 28th March, four of our Year 10 students, Ellie Walsh, Olivia Cameron, Anabelle Young and Talisa Habermann participated in a debating competition hosted by Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR).  Xavier had the chance to pit their wits against four other schools from the local area, including Scots, Albury High, Trinity College and Billabong High.  With very little time to prepare for the event, our girls put in an enormous amount of extra work at the local library to ensure that they were prepared to passionately and intelligently contribute to the debate.  The topics related to ideas of compassion and students debated topics such as People Smuggling is Always a Crime and The Economy is more important than Human Rights.  Whilst Xavier was unsuccessful in reaching the finals, the debates represented a valuable learning experience, giving students the opportunity to develop and hone their debating skills.  Well done to our four participants, who represented our school with passion and pride.
